Nocturne, called Nox for short, came to the ASPCA Adoption Center in New York City in July 2025, through a partnership with Animal Care Centers of NYC. She was a 15-year-old black cat, and she needed some care.

Nox was diagnosed with early chronic kidney disease, and nine of her teeth had to be removed. After treatment, she went to a foster home to wait for a family.

A long wait

Older cats often take longer to find a match, and Nox was no exception. Months passed in foster care. Would anyone choose a senior cat with ongoing health needs?

Someone who understood

Near the end of the year, a woman named Olivia spotted Nox’s profile online. Olivia had lost her own cat, Inks, the previous fall. She had adopted Inks from the very same ASPCA Adoption Center eight years earlier.

Olivia decided to give Nox a home.

A bright new day

Nox has now settled into Olivia’s apartment, where she can rest on the couch, explore the shelves and curl up on the bed. After a long wait, she has the quiet, loving home every senior cat deserves.

Her story shows how one good adoption experience can lead to another, and how people who have loved an older pet often understand best what a senior cat needs.

Thinking about adopting a senior pet?

Older dogs and cats are often calm, gentle and already house-trained. If you are curious whether a senior pet could fit your life, our Adopting an Older Pet guides are a good place to start.
