For more than a decade, Loki had one home and one family. Then that family moved away, and the 14-year-old orange cat was left behind.
Loki ended up at the Spotsylvania Animal Shelter in Fredericksburg, Virginia. Everything he knew was gone.
When a cat stops eating
The change was too much for him. Loki stopped eating. For any cat, and especially an older one, refusing food is serious. Shelter staff were worried about his health and gave him medicine to help bring back his appetite.
A gentle soul
Despite everything, Loki stayed gentle. In a video the shelter shared, he leaned into soft pets and turned his head so staff could reach his favorite spots. He was clearly a cat who loved people, even after people had let him down.
Home again
The video drew attention online, and shortly after it was posted, Loki was adopted. After the shock of losing his home, the old orange cat has a family again.
Loki’s story is a reminder of how deeply pets attach to their homes, and how much a senior animal can suffer when left behind. It is also a reminder of how quickly kindness can turn that around.
Thinking about adopting a senior pet?
Older dogs and cats are often calm, gentle and already house-trained. If you are curious whether a senior pet could fit your life, our Adopting an Older Pet guides are a good place to start.
